                                                 RAISING A BILINGUAL CHILDREN

When people migrate to another country, they are sometimes confuse either they should raise their children with both their native language and the language of the country they live in, or just the language of the country they live in.  Parents that are fortunate to be from another portion of the world and capable of speaking a second language should make sure to give their children the gift of been able to do the same by raising them bilingual. Raising a bilingual child can open doors for a better future for the kids, expose them to a greater number of social networks, make them aware of other cultural differences, and can help them take part in the life of two or more cultures.

Even though it might be difficult at the beginning for the kids to combine the two or more languages together, it is amazing how kids catch on so quickly as time goes on, no matter what language they are brought up to speak. I experienced this while I was raising my children as well. My kids were confused most especially when they started going to school, but it all work out for my family and me now because my kids can speak fluently in my language which is  (Yoruba), English, and Spanish. I feel accomplished and happy whenever my children communicate with my friends and family when we travel to my country (Nigeria).

Raising children bilingual makes them smart, brilliant to function and understand more efficiently.  As bilingual kids grow up in life, they will be aware of which language to speak with the different person in a particular situation. Knowing and understanding another language increases bilinguals appreciation of another culture. It is enjoyable to be able to speak and understand to individuals in another language, whether they travel abroad, or if they happen to meet people from another country. Speaking, communicating and understanding more than one language can also be useful for bilingual people to get a better and well-paid job all over the world.

Some parent of bilingual children might be worried that their children might face communication problems. Furthermore,  they argue that raising bilingual children might be like wasting time, and no point of teaching their children another language if they will not continue to express themselves easily with the language. Their parent should not worry, their kid’s brain will develop well, and they will quickly adjust to the new environment, language, or culture.  Instead, the parent should hope that allowing their children to learn other language makes their children grow up well rounded, open minded individuals who would like and want to learn new things; they will be able to appreciate different people, their language, and culture.

Therefore, raising bilingual children is never a waste of time for the parents because kids develop better when they learn two or more languages from their parents. Above all, it is a great privilege for the lucky children that have parents to give them the great opportunity for them to be able to succeed and excel in their future.

  1. I agree with you. I think we should teach them native language because it is our culture. Children who were born here can speak English very well when they go to school. Therefore, I think we do not have to worried about that they can not speak English when we teach them native language.

  9. There is a lot of agreement here. I also believe bilingualism is a tremendous asset for a child. You all are lucky that this is a gift you will be able to give your children if you decide to have them.
